Papyrus Gift of the Nile
http://menic.utexas.edu/menic/cmes/out/papyrus/papyrus.html
For more than 1600 years the Egyptian Nile delta was to the papyrus scroll as Silicon Valley is to the computer disk. But the Romans developed their own competing format: rag, and later, wood-pulp parchment. By 1100 CE Egyptian papyrus agribusiness had gone the way of the lead typesetters' union. Then in 1969, papyrus made a daring comeback. Four large Nile plantations now supply a specialty art market. This University of Texas site shows the production process, from seedling to scroll.
